What caused the humanitarian crisis in Sudan?

Two years ago, in April 2023, the alliance between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) collapsed into violence. The conflict rapidly spread across the country, resulting in widespread displacement, death, injury, and destruction.

Since then, at least 20,000 people have been killed, 13 million have fled from their homes, and 25 million people are facing acute food insecurity. Women and children have borne the brunt of this enduring crisis, with every day bringing more uncertainty about finding the next meal, a safe place to stay, or simply keeping their families alive. This is the largest humanitarian and displacement crisis in the world – and yet, some of the most fragile and vulnerable communities continue to be overlooked.

Given the scope and severity of this conflict, local organizations and volunteers have been largely leading their own humanitarian response, serving as the first line of relief for impacted Sudanese communities.

How is CORE supporting people impacted by the conflict in Sudan?

Immediately after the conflict erupted, CORE launched a response in partnership with two local Sudanese NGOs, NIDAA and SuDRO, to provide lifesaving assistance to families affected by the conflict and support locally led community-based organizations (CBOs). This included supporting the operation of mobile health clinics, as well as delivering cash assistance to the most vulnerable households – specifically, pregnant women and young mothers – to meet basic needs such as food, hygiene items, medicine, and shelter.

Today, led by our local team and partners, CORE continues to prioritize the health and safety of the millions of women and children endangered by conflict. We are delivering flexible cash assistance because it is a safe and effective way to reach these families amid this volatile reality. Most importantly, it empowers them to make decisions about what their families need most.

We’re also continuing to support CBOs in and around Khartoum, the nation’s capital, where the fighting has often been most fierce. These CBOs have been a lifeline for more than 24,000 women and families by providing much-needed healthcare, nutrition, and psychosocial support, as well as offering spaces that give protection and community to survivors of gender-based violence.
