Cleaning Up Carriacou After Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 storm to form in the Atlantic, leaving a trail of devastation across the Caribbean, Mexican Gulf and Texas. The historic storm caused total destruction on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada. With over 90% of buildings destroyed and widespread damage to homes, residents of Carriacou urgently needed debris removal services, as many lacked access to functional roads, homes, and hospitals.  

Within a week, our emergency response teams were on the ground coordinating with community members, leaders, partners, and local governments to support the most vulnerable islanders. 

In Carriacou, CORE, in partnership with All Hands and Hearts, implemented a cash for work debris removal program to help clear the fallen trees, building materials, and other wreckage blocking access to homes and roads. We employed 10 community members—mainly students, small business owners, and carpenters—to lead the efforts. They supported elderly people on the island who couldn’t begin cleaning themselves. This dual approach is the first step to restabilizing disaster-stricken communities, enabling residents to rebuild their lives with both immediate financial support and improved living conditions.
