LOS ANGELES FIRES

Be Aware: Post-Wildfire Scams in LA

Since the devastating January 2025 wildfires changed Southern California forever, so many people have come together, uplifting and helping each other in this incredible time of need. We’ve watched as strangers donated clothing, food items, and their time to help those impacted. The community’s response has illuminated the true spirit of all who call the Southland home.

Unfortunately, as is often the case in times of crisis, others are looking to take advantage of the chaotic situation by preying on those in need. FEMA, the Pasadena Police Department, and the Altadena Sheriff’s Department have issued warnings so people are aware of potential scams.

If you’ve been affected by the wildfires or know someone who has, please be on the lookout for FEMA and insurance-related scams and heed this practical advice from Pasadena PD

1. Never give personal or financial information to unsolicited contacts. If someone is with FEMA or represents an insurance company, they will have legitimate documentation.

2. Always verify credentials. Call your insurance company or FEMA directly using the official phone numbers on their websites.

3. Trust your instinct. If someone is trying to hurry you or demanding any form of payment, including gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, they are likely not legitimate.

CORE’s goal is to give $10 million in cash assistance to the most vulnerable people impacted by the fires. As of early March, we have already distributed $1.5 in direct cash support, and this program will continue to evolve as the needs of our community change.

In light of fraudsters and opportunists in the area, please be aware that CORE will never ask for your social security number, bank account number, or medical cards when registering you for support. If anyone asks you for this information, we urge you to report them to the police.

While looking for disaster assistance, please exercise caution. Take a minute to verify who you are talking to. Remember, no one from CORE or any legitimate agency will pressure or rush you for information. CORE is committed to helping those impacted for years to come and will not hurry you in your personal recovery process, ask you for any sensitive personal information, or look for financial compensation. As you navigate this challenging time, please be aware of additional threats to you and your family and continue to be alert.
