Emergency Relief | 2017
What damage was caused by Hurricane Irma?
In 2017, Hurricane Irma became the first Category 5 hurricane to hit Antigua and Barbuda and surrounding islands in the northern Lesser Antilles. The storm caused catastrophic damage and at least 134 reported deaths. In Antigua and Barbuda alone, Irma caused an estimated $300 million in property damage.
How did CORE help in Antigua and Barbuda after Hurricane Irma?
After Hurricane Irma made landfall, CORE provided post-disaster technical support in hard-hit communities of Antigua and Barbuda using drone mapping and damage assessment. Our post-disaster assessments were in turn implemented by our partner, Waitt Foundation, to support their efforts to rebuild.
