There are so many humanitarian emergencies constantly happening all over the globe today – it can feel overwhelming knowing how to help. That’s why we created our annual Emergency Response Fund* that supports the rapidly evolving needs of communities in crisis while also serving as the fuel for our longer-term programs in protracted crises such as Ukraine, Haiti, and Sudan.

This year, the National Hurricane Center forecast over 20 named storms, including 11 hurricanes, five of which will be major ones – those designated as Category 3 or higher. As we brace for an incredibly active hurricane season, this prediction underscores the critical need for preparedness and rapid response capabilities that CORE’s Emergency Response Fund will provide by allowing CORE to provide critically needed humanitarian support to an estimated 12 emergency responses this year.

We responded to

HURRICANE MILTON

Hurricane Milton slammed into the west coast of Florida as a Category 3 storm, bringing maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h and inciting an onslaught of tornadoes. The storm knocked out power for millions, flooded streets and homes, and caused severe damage to public infrastructure coast to coast. Secure shelter, food, clean drinking water, and medical support remain critical needs. Communities along the coastline are facing compounding devastation after Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, exacerbating their vulnerability.

CORE’s emergency response team was on the ground in Pasco County, FL supporting communities who were grappling with unprecedented flooding. While power and water systems had mostly been restored, many community members hadn’t had fresh food or water for days. CORE distributed meals, fresh fruit, water, and hygiene kits and conducted wellness checks to provide relief until communities became more accessible. We reached 2,600 people, prioritizing support for the elderly and mobile home communities.

HURRICANE HELENE

Response: Georgia and North Carolina

Hurricane Milton hit on the heels of Hurricane Helene, which merely two weeks earlier caused a 500-mile path of destruction spanning from Florida to North Carolina and estimated damages well over $100 billion.

With a history of extensive programming and emergency responses in Georgia and North Carolina, CORE deployed teams in Lowndes County, GA and Buncombe County, NC and have reached over 60,000 people and distributed nearly 230,000 critical resources including hygiene kits, tarps, drinking water, ready to eat meal kits, and other essential relief items. We also tarped severely damaged homes and conducted medical and wellness checks to support community members, many of whom are elderly, low income and without insurance, and managing chronic illnesses.

Over the last 5 years, CORE has raised over $292 million dollars in critical funds, responded to 15 domestic and 10 international disasters, and changed the lives of over 11 million people*.

With a focus on equity, CORE continues to provide life-saving humanitarian support globally including areas of ongoing crises – like Haiti, Ukraine and Sudan – while drilling down on initiatives to support communities right here in the US, responding in Maui, Navajo Nation, & Kentucky. CORE’s domestic and international portfolio centers around Emergency Response & Preparedness; Addressing Climate Change; and Health Access.

Since March 2020, CORE has been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, administering over 7 million tests and 3 million vaccinations across the country. The organization scaled exponentially to meet the unprecedented need and to fill gaps in the healthcare system in the US and beyond, resulting in countless lives saved.
