CORE began working in India in 2021 to support equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine and protect the populations hit hardest by the pandemic, as the country suffered one of the most devastating surges recorded worldwide.

To further support vulnerable communities throughout the country, CORE implemented a food distribution program in Pune and Mumbai and shelter repair initiative in Mumbai in 2023. 

CORE partnered with the American Red Cross (AmRC) to launch a supplemental food distribution program targeting food-insecure communities in West Mumbai and Pune. During the first phase of the distribution, we provided 1,200 food kits to waste management workers living in the slums of West Mumbai. CORE provided an additional 5,500 kits to residents in Pune, primarily families of sex-workers, migrant construction workers, and those living in slum communities.
