PRESS RELEASE

CORE & World Central Kitchen Partner Up to Provide Emergency Food Assistance in Haiti

LOS ANGELES – August 2024 CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) has received $400,000 in support from World Central Kitchen (WCK) to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Haiti due to widespread violence and increasing socio-economic instability. Today, 65% of households in the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince, have insufficient food consumption to meet nutritional needs, and four in five have adopted negative coping strategies to meet food needs as they navigate dangerous conditions to secure a safe and stable source of food and access to basic resources.

Since launching this joint emergency in-kind food assistance program in April, CORE and WCK first distributed 1,500 food kits, providing 675,000 meals to highly food insecure households in the Port-au-Prince Metropolitan Zone with an emphasis on displaced families living in collective sites. With an additional top-up from WCK in June, CORE distributed an additional 1,300 kits, each carrying enough food to feed a family of five for over a month, or the equivalent of 585,000 meals.

The kits contained nutritional food staples such as rice, cooking oil, peanut butter, beans, and canned salmon, prioritizing the inclusion of locally sourced products. This ensured that recipients received foods with a long shelf life and that the initiative supports the local Haitian economy during this critical time.

CORE, which first began its humanitarian mission in post-earthquake Haiti in 2010, has a longstanding presence in the country and a Haitian-led team that is dedicated to working with local communities and officials to maximize operational impact.

Distribution sites, including schools and temporary camps for those displaced, were selected due to accessibility for particularly vulnerable populations and the safety of community members and staff. CORE is grateful for WCK’s continued partnership to support Haitians who have been most impacted by the compounded crisis in the country during this critical moment.

“At a time when focus has been pulled to other tragic crises around the world, WCK has worked with us to ensure that Haitians aren’t forgotten and won’t go hungry,” said Samba Sidibe, CORE Haiti Country Director. “This work is critical to saving Haitian lives, and WCK’s funding and partnership is a cornerstone of it.”
