George Hernandez Mejia

Director, Emergency Response

George Headshot

George joined CORE with over a decade of experience in emergency response, including stints with the U.S. Forest Service and Americorps, before turning towards non-profit work. Throughout his career, he has led with a deep passion for being in service of vulnerable communities and helping them recover from disasters.

Now as CORE’s Director of Emergency Operations, George has deployed across the United States and the Carribean and been our first boots on the ground during responses to hurricanes in the mid-Atlantic, floods in California, and fires in Maui. He leads a dedicated team of CORE staff who monitor weather events and disaster situations as they develop and are prepared to deploy to deliver critical relief at a moment’s notice.

Climate change is an exacerbating and driving factor behind extreme weather events across the globe, making George’s role and expertise more critical than ever. His team aims to increase CORE’s emergency response capacity to include an active, robust roster of technical experts and volunteers and better serve communities in times of crisis. George is committed to seeing CORE’s community-led climate mission grow, empowering more people from all socio-economic backgrounds to be better prepared for when disaster strikes.

By engaging more people in emergency operations, we can give them the tools and experience needed to support their communities in the future. I want everyone trained to know what to do in an emergency and feel they have the resources and knowledge to lead their communities.”
