LOS ANGELES FIRES
Watching the catastrophic fires grip communities across Los Angeles has been heartbreaking. Over the last few days, these fires irreparably changed the landscape of Los Angeles, destroying thousands of structures and prompting evacuation orders for nearly 180,000 people.
There is no doubt that Angelenos are feeling the immense weight of what experts are calling one of the worst natural disasters in the county’s history. CORE is proud to be based in LA — and these are our families, friends, neighbors, and coworkers whose lives have been turned upside down in an instant.
Whether you have been directly impacted by the wildfires, know people who have been, or live in affected areas, it’s imperative to take care of yourself. We understand navigating disasters can be overwhelming. We’ve put together some essential reminders to help manage your emotional and mental health as you process the impact of these fires.
Take Care of Your Body. Try to eat healthy, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and other drugs. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
Connect. Share your feelings with a friend or family member. Maintain relationships and rely on your support system. SAMHSA
Be kind to yourself. Some feelings when witnessing a disaster may be difficult to accept. You may feel relief that the disaster did not reach you, or you may feel guilt that you were left untouched when so many were affected. Both feelings are common. American Psychology Association (APA)
Take Breaks. Make time to unwind. Try to return to activities that you enjoy. Although you’ll want to keep informed—especially if you have loved ones affected by the disasters—take a break from watching the news. SAMHSA / APA
Ask for Help. Talk to a counselor, doctor, or clergy member, or contact a crisis helpline such as the SAMHSA Disaster Distress Hotline at (800) 985-5990.

CORE’s heart is with our Los Angeles community. Our local response team is delivering N-95 masks and hygiene kits to people who were forced to evacuate from their homes, and to unhoused people in affected areas. We will continue to help local families long after the fires are extinguished. But right now, ensuring the health and safety of community members is our top priority. We will rebuild Los Angeles together.
